Honduras VS France - Honduran Baleadas RECIPE

DAY 4 - HONDURAN BALEADAS

Hello everyone,

I hope you enjoyed the football filled weekend! Last night Honduras played against France and as expected...France won! So what did we cook last night? Honduran! And I had no idea what Honduran food would be like. It turns out that it is quite similar to the rest of the Latin cuisine. When reasearching into typical Honduran food I came across baleadas many many times, as it's apparantly one of Honduaras' most popular and original foods. A baleada is a thick wheat flour tortilla filled with beans/cheese (or anything you like) and it was delicious! Depending in your mood and filling it can be eaten for breakfast or dinner. The difference to other tortillas is that Honduran baleadas are a little bit thicker and folded in half.

Instead of buying the ready made tortillas I made the dough from scratch this time and it was delicious! Once you had the homemade ones you'll never want to buy the supermarket tortillas again. It didn't take long at all and it's definitely worth it!

RECIPE BALEADAS DOUGH

INGREDIENTS (8 BALEADAS)

2 cups wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
Salt - pinch
1-3/4 cups of water
3 tablespoons butter or oil

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, butter pieces/oil together in a bowl
2. Create a well and pour the water in, start with one cup and add more if the dough is too dry. The dough needs to be only a little bit sticky.
3. Cover the dough in the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.
4. Clean a surface and cover it with some flour
5. Cut the dough into 8 pieces and roll each piece into a small ball
6. Heat a pan without oil and roll each ball out so that it is 3 1/8 inch thick
7. Fry the baleadas in the pan one after another until they are slightly puffed and have light brown spots.

RECIPE BALEADAS FILLING - CHICKEN & CORN/BEAN FILLING

INGREDIENTS

200 g chicken breast
1 tin sweet corn
1 small tin red kidney beans
1 red onion
Smoked paprika
Pepper
Salt
Ground cumin
Coriander
Lemon
Sour Cream

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Marinate the chicken in smoked paprika for a few hours in the fridge.
2. Fry the corn and beans in a pan with half of the red onion.
3. Add cumin, salt and pepper and let it sizzle for another 3 minutes.
4. Fry the rest of the onions in another pan and add the chicken. Cook this until the chicken is cooked.
5. Depending on what you like you can now top your tortillas with anything you like! We chose to have some sour cream, a drizzle of lemon juice, grated cheese and fresh coriander.

Enjoy!
